🐷🔌Hi Planet heroes, today we’ll explore Nuclear Energy!
🔌Nuclear energy is produced by splitting atoms in a process called nuclear fission. This reaction releases a tremendous amount of heat, which is then used to generate electricity in power plants.
🐷How is nuclear energy made?
🔋In a nuclear reactor, uranium atoms are split apart in a controlled environment. This splitting releases heat, which turns water into steam. The steam drives turbines connected to generators, producing electricity.
🐷Is nuclear energy renewable?
🔋Technically, nuclear energy is not considered renewable because it relies on uranium, a finite resource. However, it is a low-carbon energy source, meaning it does not produce the greenhouse gases associated with fossil fuels.
Nuclear energy is a controversial topic. On one hand, it provides a stable, low-emission source of electricity. In Hong Kong, 25% of our electricity comes from the Daya Bay nuclear plant, a near zero-emissions source. On the other hand, concerns about nuclear waste, potential accidents, and the long-term storage of radioactive materials make it a debated option.
♻️Electricity generation in Hong Kong has traditionally been dominated by carbon-intensive coal. However, recent shifts have seen CLP and Hong Kong Electric moving towards cleaner coal plants and natural gas, which are less polluting fossil fuels.
What can you do? If you’re interested in energy choices but concerned about nuclear power, support efforts to balance various energy sources, advocate for advancements in safe nuclear technology, and reduce your personal energy consumption.
Let’s navigate the future of energy wisely and work towards a greener Hong Kong!
