💡Solar Energy and Hong Kong: Brightening Up Our City! 🌞
Ever thought about how the sun could power your day? Solar energy is all about capturing sunlight and turning it into electricity or heat. It’s a clean, renewable energy source that helps reduce pollution and combat climate change.
☀️What is solar energy?
It’s the power we get from the sun’s rays. When we use solar panels, we can convert this sunlight into electricity.
🔋How do solar cells work?
Solar panels are made up of many small units called solar cells. These cells are typically made from silicon. When sunlight hits the cells, it knocks electrons loose from their atoms. This movement of electrons creates an electric current, which we can use to power our homes and gadgets.
In Hong Kong, solar energy is starting to shine bright. Rooftops across our city are now sporting solar panels, catching rays and turning them into electricity. It’s a smart way to use our sunny days to power homes, schools, and businesses while cutting down on our reliance on fossil fuels. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have installed solar panles on campus rooftops, creating one of hong kong’s biggest solar projects!
In fact, using solar panels can help avoid around 1,000 kilograms of CO2 per year for every megawatt of solar power installed, compared to traditional coal or natural gas methods.
What can you do? If you don’t have access to solar energy-powered electricity, that’s okay! Start sustainable electricity consumption by simply reducing your usage. Record your utility bills on ZERO2 and get rewards! Every small step helps make our city greener.🏙️
